Search for alicante airport car rental 24h and you will find plenty of promises, but very little about what actually happens when your plane touches down at 23:40 and the desk on your voucher closed at 23:00. Late landings and delayed flights are where most car hire stress at Alicante-Elche airport (ALC) comes from: a booking marked as a no-show, an out-of-hours fee nobody mentioned, or a shuttle stop with no shuttle.
This guide is about the night and the delay, not the terminal layout, which is covered step by step in our Alicante airport arrival guide. Here you get a setup checklist for before you fly, a message you can copy and send to any rental company, a list of what is still open in the terminal late at night, and a plan B if the car is not there. We run a local rental company in Alicante, so we also explain plainly how our own after-hours handovers work, including what we do not offer.
The short answer: is there 24-hour car hire at Alicante airport?
Flights land at Alicante late into the night, but car hire there is not one 24-hour service. Every rental company sets its own desk or handover hours, those hours can change with the season, and they do not always match the flight schedule. AENA, the airport operator, lists the rental companies on Floor 0 (Arrivals) with their phone numbers on its car hire page, but that page shows no opening hours. The only reliable source for your booking is your own voucher plus a written answer from the company.
So the useful question is not which company is open 24 hours. It is what exactly happens to your booking if you land after the desk or handover window closes. Ask that before you fly and a late landing becomes a minor detail. Skip it and a two-hour delay can cost you the car, the prepayment and a taxi on top.
Before you fly: the late-arrival setup in 7 steps
Ten minutes of preparation at home removes most late-night problems. Do these in order:
- Add your flight number to the booking. Most booking forms have a field for it. With a flight number, a company can see a delay instead of guessing, and a delayed customer is easier to wait for than a customer who simply did not turn up.
- Book a realistic pickup time. Your pickup time is not your landing time. Add passport control, bags and the walk to the desk or meeting point. If your scheduled landing is close to closing time, a realistic pickup time may already sit outside normal hours, and it is better to know that now than at the desk.
- Find the desk or handover hours on your voucher. Look for opening hours of the pickup location itself, not the hours of a central phone line. If the voucher shows no hours, ask.
- Find the no-show and late arrival clause. In the terms and conditions, search for the words no-show, late arrival, delay and flight. Note how long the car is held and what happens to money you paid in advance.
- Find the out-of-hours fee. Search for out of hours, after hours and night. Note whether it is charged per pickup, per return or both, and whether it has to be requested in advance.
- Save the right phone number. You need the number of the pickup location or the local team, not a call centre that opens at 09:00. If you booked through a broker, the voucher normally names the company that actually supplies the car; save that number too.
- Get the answers in writing. An email or a chat message from the company. A phone promise made at 22:00 is hard to prove a week later.
If your arrival is close to the limits, also read our guide to hidden fees in Spanish car hire, which shows where in the contract after-hours, fuel and admin charges usually sit.
The message to send before a late flight
Copy this, fill in the brackets and send it by email or chat to the company that will hand you the car. It turns a vague promise into a written answer you can show on the night.
Hello, my booking reference is [reference]. My flight [flight number] from [city] is scheduled to land at Alicante airport at [time] on [date]. Please confirm in writing: 1) whether you will hold the car if the flight is delayed, and until what time; 2) the exact out-of-hours fee for my pickup and for my return, if any; 3) exactly where I collect the car and which number I call or message after landing; 4) what happens to my prepayment if I cannot collect the car tonight. Thank you.
Save the reply as a screenshot as well as in your inbox, because phones die and airport wifi is unreliable exactly when you need it. If the answer is vague, along the lines of 'don't worry, we always wait', ask again for a specific time. That one detail is what matters if anything goes wrong.
What usually happens when your flight lands after the desk closes
There is no single rule in Spain for this. It depends on the rental terms you accepted, so treat the patterns below as a map of what to look for, not a promise about any particular company.
The no-show clause
Many rental terms define a no-show: you do not appear within a set window after the booked pickup time. The booking can then be cancelled, and a prepaid amount may be kept in whole or in part. The length of that window differs from company to company, and so does the answer to whether a flight number on the booking extends it. This is the single most important clause to read before a late flight.
Grace periods and delayed flights
Some companies hold the car for a delayed flight if they have the flight number and can see the new landing time. Others hold it only until the desk closes. Some can arrange a pickup outside hours for a fee if you contact them in time. Read the exact wording, because 'we wait for delayed flights' and 'we wait until closing time' are very different promises at midnight.
Broker bookings
If you booked through a comparison or broker site, two sets of terms apply: the broker's and the supplier's. On the night, the desk applies the supplier's rules. If you are running late, contact the supplier directly as well as the broker, because a broker's support queue may not reach a closing desk in time.
Off-airport depots and the last shuttle
Companies with a car park outside the terminal add one more variable: the shuttle. Shuttles run to each company's own schedule, frequency usually drops late in the evening, and when the depot closes the shuttle stops too. Your voucher normally says where the shuttle stop is and how to call the depot. If no shuttle comes, call before you start walking or ordering a taxi, and note the time of the call.
Late pickup options at ALC compared
The way you collect the car decides how much can go wrong after dark. This is how the main pickup types usually behave on a late or delayed arrival:
| Pickup type | What usually happens late | What to confirm in writing | Risk on a delayed flight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desk inside the terminal | Car held while the desk is open; after closing it depends on the company | Desk hours, no-show window, whether the flight number extends it | Medium: fine while the delay stays within opening hours |
| Off-airport depot with shuttle | Shuttle and depot follow their own hours; late service can be limited | Depot hours, late shuttle arrangements, the depot's own phone number | Higher: two things must still be running, the shuttle and the depot |
| Broker booking | The supplier's rules apply on the night, not the broker's page | Which supplier, its hours and its no-show clause | Higher: support runs through two companies |
| Meet and greet by a local company | A person meets you with the car at an agreed point; out-of-hours handovers by arrangement, often for a fee | Exact meeting point, out-of-hours fee, the number to message on landing | Lower, if the flight number is on the booking and the fee is agreed in advance |
Collect tonight or tomorrow morning?
If your flight lands well after midnight and you are staying in or near Alicante city, compare two options honestly: an out-of-hours fee plus a tired drive at 01:00, against a taxi tonight and a pickup the next morning during normal hours. Moving the pickup to the morning also shortens the rental, and depending on how the company counts rental days it may cost one day less. Our comparison of airport and city centre car hire shows when a city pickup makes sense.
On the night: landing late at Alicante airport
- Turn your phone on as soon as you are allowed. Check messages from the rental company before passport control; a meeting point or a phone number may have arrived while you were in the air.
- Send a short update if you are delayed. 'Landed, waiting for bags, about 30 minutes' saves everyone a phone call and creates a written timeline.
- Follow your pickup type, not the crowd. AENA lists the rental desks on Floor 0 (Arrivals); shuttle stops and meet and greet points are elsewhere, so read your voucher once more before you start walking.
- Inspect the car properly, even in the dark. Use the phone torch, film a slow walk around the car, and photograph the fuel gauge and the odometer. Dim car parks hide scratches that are very visible in daylight. Our car hire pickup checklist shows exactly what to film.
- Do not sign for things you did not ask for. A tired customer at closing time is the easiest upsell of the day. If a desk pushes extra cover, our guide to rental desk upsell scripts has polite answers that work at any hour.
Returning the car out of hours for an early flight
The mirror problem: a 06:00 departure means returning the car before many desks open. Before the trip ends, ask the company in writing how an out-of-hours return works, where to park, where the keys go and whether a fee applies. Then protect yourself:
- Refuel the evening before if your fuel policy is full to full, and keep the receipt; do not count on finding an open fuel station at 04:30 on the way.
- Photograph the car on all four sides where you leave it, plus the fuel gauge, the odometer and the key drop if there is one.
- Send those photos to the company by email or message before you board, so the time stamp sits on their side too.
Many deposit disputes start with a return nobody witnessed. If one happens anyway, the steps in our deposit not refunded playbook apply.
If the car is not there: plan B at night
Sometimes, despite everything, the desk is closed and nobody answers the phone. Stay calm and collect evidence:
- Photograph the closed desk or the empty meeting point with the time visible, and screenshot your call log. This is your proof that you turned up.
- Message the company in writing that you were there at that time, and ask how they will solve it. Do not accept a no-show charge by staying silent.
- Get to your accommodation. According to AENA, the taxi rank is on the arrivals roadway and airport fares include a 4.25 EUR supplement; the Radio Taxi Elche information point in the arrivals hall is listed as open from 09:00 to 01:00. The C-6 bus to central Alicante leaves from the departures roadway and runs every day of the year, but check the operator's current timetable for late departures before you count on it.
- Keep every receipt. Taxi, hotel, a replacement car. If the failure was the company's, these are the costs you will claim.
- Ask for the official complaint form if you are dealing with a business in person. In the Valencian Community, traders must have the official hojas de reclamaciones available. Once you have both filled it in, you receive two copies: the white one to send to the regional consumer office (Servicios Territoriales de Comercio y Consumo) and the green one to keep.
- Check what the airline owes you. Under EU air passenger rights, if you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late you may be entitled to compensation from the airline, unless the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances such as bad weather. It is a fixed amount set by flight distance, not a refund of your car hire costs, so check your travel insurance for those.
What is still open in the terminal late at night
After landing you are on the public side of the terminal, so the long list of cafes past security does not help you. These are public-side services that AENA lists with late closing times, as published on aena.es in October 2026. Hours change with the season and the flight schedule, so check the AENA page before you rely on one.
| Service | Where | Hours listed by AENA |
|---|---|---|
| WHSmith | Floor 0, Arrivals, public zone | 08:00 to 01:00 |
| Lavazza cafe | Floor 0, Arrivals, public zone | 08:00 to 23:00 |
| Pharmacy | Floor 0, Arrivals, public zone | 07:30 to 23:00 |
| Starbucks | Floor 2, Departures, exterior area | 04:30 to 22:30 |
| Tim Hortons | Floor 2, Departures, public zone | 04:30 to 21:30 |
| Radio Taxi Elche information point | Arrivals hall | 09:00 to 01:00 |
Two practical notes. If you land after midnight, very little is open on the arrivals side, so buy water and something to eat before you board. And if you travel with children, the pharmacy closing time matters: anything you might need for the first night is easier to buy before 23:00 than to look for in a town you do not know.
Driving out of Alicante airport at night
The airport sits southwest of Alicante city, near Elche, with fast roads in every direction. Night driving here is easy in traffic terms, but you are tired and in a car you do not know yet. Run this short routine before you leave the car park:
- Set the navigation while parked. Holding a phone while driving is an offence in Spain, and the airport exits come quickly. Mount the phone or use the car's screen.
- Find the lights and the V-16 beacon. Since 1 January 2026 the connected V-16 beacon has replaced warning triangles as the only legal way to signal a stopped Spanish-registered car, which is what a Spanish rental company gives you, and those cars must carry one. The DGT notes it can be placed on the roof without getting out of the car, which is exactly what you want on a dark road. Ask where it is before you drive off.
- Know the limits. The DGT's generic limits for cars are 120 km/h on motorways (autopistas and autovías) and 90 km/h on conventional roads. In towns the limit is 50 km/h on streets with two or more lanes per direction, 30 km/h on streets with one lane per direction and 20 km/h on single-surface streets where road and pavement are at the same level. Fixed speed cameras do not switch off at night.
- Choose the road, not only the destination. North toward Benidorm and Valencia the AP-7 is toll-free; heading south toward Cartagena, some AP-7 sections still charge tolls, and your navigation app can show or avoid them. Our guide to motorways in Spain explains A roads and AP roads, and the airport to Benidorm driving guide covers one of the most popular drives from the terminal.
- Be honest about tiredness. If you have been travelling since dawn, a long drive feels much longer at midnight. When the drive is long, a hotel near the airport and an early start can be the safer choice.
- Zero alcohol on arrival night. New drivers have a lower legal limit in Spain than everyone else, and checks happen at night too. After a flight, the simplest rule is none at all.
How late arrivals work with us
Since we are a local company working at this airport, here is our own setup in plain numbers, so you can measure it against the checklist above. We do not run a 24-hour desk. Handovers at Alicante airport are free between 09:00 and 20:00 every day. Outside those hours we hand over by arrangement for 50 EUR per handover, so a late pickup plus an early-morning return comes to 100 EUR in total. Support runs 24-7 by phone and WhatsApp on +34 607 442 437, so there is someone to message when a flight slips late into the evening.
The meeting point is on the departures level (top floor) at the express parking opposite Starbucks: walk out of the arrivals hall, take the lift or escalator two floors up and go outside. Our booking form has an optional flight number field, and we use it to track the flight and adjust the meeting time. If a delay is likely to push your handover past 20:00, message us on WhatsApp so the new time and the fee are agreed in writing. Fuel is full to full, and every car is listed on our fleet page.
FAQ: late arrivals and out-of-hours car hire at Alicante airport
Is there 24-hour car hire at Alicante airport?
Not as one airport-wide service. Each company sets its own desk or handover hours, which can change by season, and AENA's car hire page does not list them. Check the pickup hours on your voucher and ask in writing what happens if you land after they end.
What happens if my flight is delayed and I miss my car hire pickup?
It depends on the no-show and late arrival clauses in your rental terms. With a flight number on the booking, a company can see the delay and some will hold the car; without one, a missed pickup can be treated as a no-show and a prepayment may be lost. Message the company as soon as you know about the delay.
Can I pick up a hire car at Alicante airport late at night?
Often yes, but usually as an out-of-hours service that has to be arranged in advance and may carry a fee. Ask for the fee, the exact meeting point and the phone number to use on landing, all in writing.
How much is the out-of-hours fee for car hire at Alicante airport?
It varies by company and is often a fixed amount per pickup or per return. Ours is 50 EUR per handover outside 09:00 to 20:00. Whoever you book with, check whether the fee applies to the pickup, the return or both.
Does the car hire company track my flight?
Only if it has your flight number and its process actually uses it. Add the number when you book, then confirm by message that it is on your booking.
What can I do at Alicante airport if my hire car is not there at night?
Photograph the empty desk or meeting point with the time, message the company in writing, and get to your accommodation by taxi from the arrivals roadway or by the C-6 bus if it is still running. Keep every receipt, and ask for the hojas de reclamaciones if you are dealing with a business in person.
Landing late or flying out early? Check live prices for your exact times on weonerent.es, add your flight number when you book, and read the help centre if anything about your arrival is unclear; our WhatsApp support runs 24-7. Whoever you book with, get the out-of-hours answer in writing before you fly.
