Car hire in Benidorm sounds simple until you start comparing the options: a handover at Alicante airport or a car brought to your hotel, a deposit held on your card or none at all, and a car that has to fit both a Benidorm hotel garage and the steep lanes of Altea. This guide is for anyone staying in Benidorm, Altea, Albir or La Nucia who wants a car for the whole holiday or just for a few days of it, and it shows what each choice really costs in 2026.
We are WeOneRent, a local rental company based in Alicante, and we deliver cars along this part of the Costa Blanca, so read this with that in mind. Where we quote numbers, they are our own live prices, checked in October 2026, and where another approach suits you better we say so. Our Google profile is public: 5.0 from 127 reviews at the time of writing. The drive itself, motorway or coastal road, and the main public car parks in Benidorm are already covered in our Alicante airport to Benidorm driving guide, so this article does not repeat them.
The short answer
- Landing between 09:00 and 20:00 and keeping the car all week: collect it at Alicante airport. The handover is free in those hours and you drive yourself north in under an hour.
- Landing late, travelling with tired children, or wanting a car for only part of the stay: have it delivered to your hotel, villa or apartment and pay the delivery fee for each leg, 60 EUR each way in this area.
- Staying in Altea old town or a hillside villa: book a compact car, not the biggest one on the list.
- Not wanting money tied up during the holiday: choose the Zero Deposit cover, which is the default in our booking widget.
The rest of this guide explains the trade-offs behind each of those lines, with real numbers.
Airport pickup or delivery: how the two options work
Picking up at Alicante airport
At Alicante-Elche airport (ALC) we meet you on the departures level, at the express parking opposite Starbucks. From the arrivals hall you go up two levels by lift or escalator and step outside; the reminder email before your trip spells out the route. The handover is free every day between 09:00 and 20:00. Outside those hours it costs 50 EUR per handover, so a midnight arrival with a daytime return costs 50 EUR, not 100. More detail is on our Alicante airport pickup page.
The advantage is obvious: no delivery fee, and the car is yours from the first minute, which helps if you want to stop at a supermarket before checking in. The downside is that you drive straight after a flight, in an unfamiliar car, into Benidorm's one-way streets and hotel garages. For a confident driver landing mid-afternoon that is no problem at all. For a family arriving at night it can be the least pleasant hour of the trip.
Delivery to your hotel, villa or apartment
The alternative is to reach your accommodation by bus, taxi or transfer and let the car come to you. In Benidorm, Altea, Albir and La Nucia the handover takes place at your hotel, villa or apartment, or at a meeting point we agree with you in advance. After booking you send us the address and your arrival time, and we confirm the exact spot and time by email and WhatsApp.
Delivery to Costa Blanca towns outside the free Alicante zone costs between 60 and 120 EUR each way, depending on distance. Benidorm, Altea, Albir and La Nucia are all at the bottom of that range, 60 EUR each way, and the full table is on our hotel delivery page. Each leg is charged separately: bringing the car at the start and collecting it at the end are two legs. In the booking widget you choose Benidorm or Altea as the pickup point, and the delivery appears as its own line in the quote before you pay, so the price is never a surprise at the door.
Mixing the two
You do not have to use the same model at both ends. A common pattern is to collect the car at the airport on arrival, when the handover is free, and hand it back at your hotel on the last morning, then take a transfer to the flight without worrying about returning a car. In that case only the return leg carries a fee, and the quote shows it before you pay. The reverse works too: the car appears at your hotel the morning after a late arrival, and you drop it at the airport on the way home.
Which option costs less? Five typical stays
The car and its cover cost the same whichever pickup point you choose. In our live search for dates in November 2026 and July 2027, the daily rate for an economy hatchback was identical at the airport and in Benidorm. What changes the total is delivery, after-hours handovers and how many days you actually rent.
| Your stay | Best option | Delivery legs | Extra on top of car and cover | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A week in Benidorm, flight lands at 14:00 | Airport pickup and return | 0 | 0 EUR | Driving straight after the flight |
| A week in an Altea villa, family with luggage | Delivery to the villa and collection | 2 | 120 EUR, two legs of 60 EUR | You still need a transfer from the airport |
| Ten days in Albir, car needed for four of them | Delivery for the middle of the stay | 2 | 120 EUR for two legs, but six fewer rental days | Minimum rental is 3 days |
| Flight lands at 23:30, a week in La Nucia | Airport pickup with a night handover | 0 | 50 EUR for the night handover | Return between 09:00 and 20:00 to avoid a second 50 EUR |
| A week in Benidorm, transfer already booked home | Airport pickup, return at your hotel | 1 | One return leg, shown in the quote | Agree the collection time a day ahead |
To put numbers on the third case: four days of an economy car at the 42 EUR daily rate in our live search, with Zero Deposit cover at 30 EUR a day, comes to 288 EUR before delivery. The same car and cover for all ten days came to about 673 EUR, even with the lower daily car rate that longer bookings get in our live prices. The difference of roughly 385 EUR is more than three times the 120 EUR for two delivery legs. If you mostly want the beach and two or three day trips, renting only for those days is often the cheaper and calmer plan.
The honest flip side: if you land in working hours, are happy to drive from the terminal and want the car every day, airport pickup is the cheapest way to do it, and paying for a transfer plus delivery makes little sense.
What a week really costs: car plus cover
We never quote a bare car rate as the price, because nobody drives away without cover. In October 2026 our live search for a seven-day rental from Benidorm returned economy hatchbacks at 42 EUR per day and compact crossovers at 65 EUR per day for the car, for dates in November, May and July alike. Add the cover tier you choose, and a week in an economy car looks like this:
| Cover tier | Cover per day | 7 days, economy car plus cover | Refundable deposit | Your maximum for at-fault damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 5 EUR | 329 EUR | 1,100 EUR, returned within 30 working days | 2,500 EUR |
| Essential | 12 EUR | 378 EUR | 500 EUR, returned within 1-3 working days | 900 EUR |
| Comfort | 18 EUR | 420 EUR | 300 EUR, returned within 1-3 working days | 700 EUR |
| Zero Deposit (default) | 30 EUR | 504 EUR | None | 500 EUR |
| Top tier, zero excess | 36 EUR | 546 EUR | None | 0 EUR |
All prices include IVA at 21%. Every tier includes third-party liability; glass and tyres are covered from Essential upwards, and roadside assistance with free towing across mainland Spain from Comfort upwards. Mileage is 200 km per day counted over the whole rental (100 km per day on Basic), with 0.30 EUR per extra kilometre, and the top tier has no daily limit. Fuel is full to full. For a compact crossover, add 23 EUR per day to every line above. On longer rentals the car price drops: a 14-day economy rental in November 2026 showed 522 EUR for the car instead of 588 EUR. The full conditions of each tier are on our insurance page.
The no-deposit option, without the small print
Search for car hire Benidorm no deposit and you will find plenty of promises, so here is exactly how it works with us. On the Zero Deposit cover there is no deposit of any kind: nothing is charged, blocked or pre-authorised on your card for it, and your worst case for at-fault damage is capped at 500 EUR. On Basic, Essential and Comfort you leave a refundable deposit of 1,100, 500 or 300 EUR. It is an ordinary payment, not a block on your card, and you can make it in cash, by card or by bank transfer. It comes back in full within 1-3 working days on Essential and Comfort, and within 30 working days on Basic, which is roughly six weeks.
Debit cards are accepted. That matters, because at most airport chains the deposit runs from several hundred to over 1,000 EUR on a credit card in the main driver's name, and arriving with only a debit card is a classic reason for a refused pickup. Which tier makes sense? If you want the lowest total and do not mind 500 EUR leaving your account for a few days, Essential is the sweet spot. If you travel on a debit card, share one card for the whole family budget, or simply do not want to think about it, Zero Deposit is the calm choice. Basic only suits people who are comfortable with 1,100 EUR being away for around six weeks. Our no-deposit rental guide for Alicante compares the schemes you will meet on the market in more depth.
Which car fits Benidorm garages and Altea's old town
The Marina Baixa looks like easy driving country on a map, but the last hundred metres to your bed can be tight. Choose the car for where you sleep, not for the motorway.
Benidorm hotels and apartment towers
For two people, a compact hatchback such as the Peugeot 208 is the stress-free choice: easy in the one-way grid of the centre and easy to slot into any space you find. If you are four with suitcases, a Peugeot 308 or Opel Astra gives you a noticeably bigger boot without becoming hard to park. If your hotel or apartment parks guests underground, ask how tight the ramp and bays are before you book a crossover.
Altea old town
Altea's old town, the casc antic around the blue-domed church, is steep, cobbled and largely pedestrian, and access for non-resident cars is restricted in parts of it, so follow the signs at each entrance rather than your sat nav. Do not plan to drive to your door. Park in the lower town and walk up. If you are staying inside the old town, we agree a handover point that a car can actually reach, for example on the seafront or in the street closest to your accommodation, and can suggest where to park nearby.
Villas in Altea Hills, Albir and La Nucia
Hillside urbanisations are where size and gearbox matter most: steep access roads, sloping driveways and gates that open onto a hill. A compact crossover such as the Toyota Yaris Cross or Kia Stonic gives a higher seating position and more luggage room while staying short enough for tight turns; exact models depend on availability for your dates, and we do not guarantee a specific one. Most of our cars are automatics, and every car card in the widget shows the gearbox, so check it if you would rather not do hill starts with a clutch. You can browse the range on our cars page.
What we do not offer, so you can plan around it: seven-seaters, vans, convertibles and one-way rentals to other regions. A group of six will be better served by two cars or by a company that specialises in larger vehicles.
Benidorm's low emission zone: what hotel guests should know
Benidorm runs a low emission zone (Zona de Bajas Emisiones, ZBE) in three areas, Centre, Levante and Poniente, which the council describes as the busiest pedestrian parts of town. According to the town council, it began with a six-month information phase on 1 January 2025 and has been fully operational since 1 July 2025, with cameras reading number plates at the access points. Access is limited to residents, public transport and vehicles with an authorisation, and foreign number plates follow the same rules as Spanish ones.
For hotel guests the council has a specific procedure: the hotel registers its guests' number plates on the council's ZBE platform, for the whole stay if you use the hotel's own car park, or only for the check-in and check-out days if you just use the loading bay at the door. Under the council's guidance for hotels, the registration can be made up to three months in advance and up to five days after the car enters the zone. In practice that leaves you one simple step: give reception the plate number of your hire car on the day it arrives, and ask them to confirm it is registered.
If you are in a holiday apartment rather than a hotel, ask your host before arrival whether the building is inside the zone and how guests' cars get access. The council's ZBE leaflet (in Spanish) has a map of the three areas and a contact email for questions. Parking is the other Benidorm reality: street spaces in the centre are scarce and hotel parking is often charged per night. Our driving guide lists the main public car parks, so check your hotel's parking before deciding how many days you really need the car.
Albir and La Nucia: quieter bases where a car earns its keep
Albir belongs to the municipality of l'Alfàs del Pi and sits between Benidorm and Altea, below the cliffs of the Serra Gelada natural park. It is calmer than Benidorm, with a pebble beach and a seafront promenade, and it is about 15 minutes by car from the centre of Benidorm. The classic outing is the walk to the Faro de l'Albir lighthouse: about 5 km there and back on an asphalted path with little climbing, which the regional natural parks service lists as an accessible route. The route is on foot, so leave the car at the car park where it starts in Albir. For car hire in Albir there is no need to travel to a rental desk: choose Benidorm or Altea as the pickup point in the widget, then send us your Albir address.
La Nucia is different again: an inland town on the hills behind Benidorm, around 15 minutes away, with large residential areas of villas spread across the slopes. If you are looking to rent a car in La Nucia, the same approach applies, delivery to your villa or an agreed spot, and for a villa stay there a car is close to essential for shopping, beaches and day trips. For a wider view of where these towns sit on the coast, see our Costa Blanca north vs south guide.
Day trips from a Benidorm, Altea or Albir base
The Marina Baixa, the district around Benidorm, packs mountains, waterfalls and coves into a small area, which is exactly why a car pays off here. The times below are approximate from the centre of Benidorm outside peak traffic; allow more in July and August.
| Destination | From Benidorm | Why go | Car tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guadalest | About 20 km, 30-40 min | Castle village on a rock above a turquoise reservoir | Go early; the road climbs with many bends |
| Fonts de l'Algar, Callosa d'en Sarrià | About 20 km, 30-40 min | Waterfalls and river pools | Check opening times and tickets on the official site first |
| Faro de l'Albir | About 9 km, around 15 min | Cliff walk to a lighthouse in the Serra Gelada park | Park at the start of the route; the path is on foot |
| Altea old town | About 12 km, 15-20 min | White streets and the blue-domed church | Park in the lower town and walk up |
| Calpe and the Penyal d'Ifac | About 25 km, around 30 min | The famous rock and its natural park | The AP-7 north of Alicante is toll-free |
| Villajoyosa | About 14 km, around 20 min | Painted seafront houses and chocolate history | An easy half day, combine it with a beach |
For the full write-up of these drives and longer ones such as the Sierra Aitana loop, see our day trips from Alicante by car guide; for swimming spots from Altea's pebble seafront to the coves further north, use our best beaches on the Costa Blanca guide. If Calpe rather than Benidorm is your base, our Calpe car hire page covers it. One money tip: the AP-7 between Alicante and Tarragona, which includes the stretch past Benidorm, Altea and Calpe, has been toll-free since 2020, so motorway hops up the coast cost you only fuel. Fill up before heading inland, as petrol stations thin out in the mountain villages.
Before you book: a short checklist
- Length: the minimum rental is 3 days; for a shorter trip, write to us on WhatsApp or by email.
- Documents: a valid driving licence held for at least one year, a passport or national ID and a payment card. A licence not written in the Latin alphabet needs an International Driving Permit or an official translation. The full requirements are in our rental terms.
- Drivers: the minimum age is 21, and a second driver costs 6 EUR per day.
- Children: a child seat costs 42 EUR and a booster 36 EUR per rental, not per day. Spanish traffic rules require children up to 135 cm tall to use a child restraint suited to their size and weight and, as a general rule, to sit in the back.
- Handover: send your hotel or villa address and arrival time after booking; we confirm the spot and time by email and WhatsApp.
- Central Benidorm: give your plate number to hotel reception for the low emission zone.
- Condition: photograph the car at handover and at return; our pickup checklist shows what to capture.
- Fuel: full to full, so find the petrol station nearest your hotel before the last morning.
FAQ: car hire in Benidorm, Altea and Albir
Can I get car hire in Benidorm with no deposit?
Yes. With the Zero Deposit cover, the default in our widget, there is no deposit at all and nothing is blocked or pre-authorised on your card; your maximum for at-fault damage is 500 EUR. The cheaper tiers take a refundable deposit, paid in cash, by card or by bank transfer, and returned within 1-3 working days (Basic: within 30 working days).
Do you deliver hire cars to hotels in Benidorm, Albir and La Nucia?
Yes, to hotels, villas and apartments, or to a meeting point we agree with you. Delivery outside the free Alicante zone costs 60 to 120 EUR each way depending on the town, with Benidorm, Altea, Albir and La Nucia at 60 EUR each way, and the exact amount appears in your quote before you pay. Handovers are free of after-hours charges between 09:00 and 20:00; at other times they cost 50 EUR per handover.
Is car rental in Benidorm cheaper than at Alicante airport?
The car and the cover cost the same at both points in our live prices. Airport pickup avoids delivery fees, so it is cheaper if you are happy to drive from the terminal. Delivery wins when you would pay for a transfer anyway, arrive late, or only need the car for a few days of your stay.
What size of car is best for Altea?
A compact hatchback. Altea's old town is steep, cobbled and largely pedestrian, so you will park below it anyway, and smaller cars are easier on the access roads of hillside villas. Families with a lot of luggage can choose a compact crossover, ideally with an automatic gearbox for the hills.
Can I rent a car in La Nucia?
Yes, by delivery. Choose Benidorm or Altea as the pickup point in the widget and send us your La Nucia address, and we bring the car to your villa or to an agreed spot. Because the residential areas there are spread out, most visitors staying in La Nucia find a car close to essential.
Can I rent a car in Benidorm for just a few days?
Yes, from 3 days. You can keep the first and last days car-free and take a car only for the days you plan trips to Guadalest, Altea or Calpe. With delivery to your hotel you then pay for fewer rental days plus two delivery legs, which on longer stays usually costs less than keeping a car parked for the whole holiday.
