Arranging car hire in Torrevieja early is one of the better decisions you can make for a Costa Blanca holiday. The town sits roughly 45 km south of Alicante Airport, has no direct train connection, and the bus to Alicante runs every two hours - so without a car your movement depends entirely on those timetables. With one, the pink salt lake, La Mata beach, the flamingo viewpoints and a dozen day trips are all on your own schedule.
This guide covers everything you need: the fastest route from the airport, what the low emission zone means in practice, how La Mata differs from Torrevieja proper, and an honest comparison of your rental options. All facts about distances, routes and the ZBE are verified for 2026.
Why driving makes sense in Torrevieja
Torrevieja is a larger town than visitors often expect. The old town, the marina, the main shopping streets, the seafront promenade and the salt lake perimeter are all spread across a wide area. The Laguna Salada de Torrevieja - the famous pink salt lake - stretches across the south and west of the municipality. The La Mata Lagoon (Laguna Verde) sits 5 km to the north. The viewpoints and flamingo hides along both lagoons are reached by tracks off the main roads, with no bus service at all.
On foot or by taxi, you choose between two or three fixed points per day. With a car you can follow the salt lake perimeter road, stop at every viewpoint, reach La Mata beach before 09:00, and still make dinner at the marina by 20:00. If you are staying a week or longer, a car also opens the wider area: Orihuela Costa is 20 minutes north, Cartagena under an hour south, and Murcia city about 50 minutes inland.
The bus from Alicante city bus station to Torrevieja takes 60-75 minutes and costs around 7 EUR. That service runs roughly every two hours and departs from the city bus station, not the airport - so arriving by air means a transfer first, then a wait. For most visitors with luggage, hiring a car at the airport and driving directly to Torrevieja is simpler and, over a week, usually cheaper than daily taxi trips.
Getting from Alicante Airport to Torrevieja
Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is the obvious arrival point. The drive to Torrevieja is straightforward on a clear road.
Leave the airport on the A-70, pick up the A-7 southbound (or the parallel AP-7 toll motorway if you prefer the quieter road), and follow signs for Torrevieja. After roughly 40 km on the motorway you exit near Guardamar del Segura and join the N-332 south for the last section into town.
Distance: approximately 44-45 km. Driving time: 40 to 55 minutes depending on traffic. In July and August, expect the upper end of that range in the afternoon.
Do not be tempted by the N-332 coast road all the way from Alicante. In high season it passes through Torrevieja, Guardamar, La Marina and every roundabout on the coast, and it adds 30 to 45 minutes. Save the coastal road for scenic driving once you are already in the area - it is genuinely beautiful and worth the slower pace when time is not a factor.
If you are also considering Alicante Airport for pickup, we offer free meet-and-greet at arrivals between 08:00 and 20:00, so you can drive directly to Torrevieja without any shuttle or desk queue.
Which road to take: N-332 coastal road vs A-7 motorway
Both routes are worth understanding because you will use them for different purposes during your stay.
| Route | Distance | Typical time | Summer congestion | Toll |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N-332 (coast road, full length) | ~48 km | 60-90 min | Heavy July-August | None |
| A-7 (free inland motorway) | ~45 km | 40-55 min | Moderate | None |
| AP-7 (toll motorway) | ~45 km | 35-50 min | Low | Yes (variable by section) |
For the airport transfer: A-7 inland, no toll, reliable speed. For day trips along the coast once you are settled: the N-332 is a good road and the views are worth it when you are not racing a flight.
The AP-7 is worth knowing for longer drives - for example, if you are heading north toward Valencia or south into Murcia. A detailed breakdown of which sections are currently tolled and which are free is in our AP-7 and Spanish tolls guide (2026).
Driving and parking in Torrevieja town
Torrevieja is an easy town to drive in. The street grid around the centre and the marina is logical, the roads are wide by Spanish urban standards, and there are no confusing one-way mazes in the residential areas.
Paid parking (blue zone): The central shopping streets and the seafront promenade have on-street blue zone (ORA) parking, paid on weekdays during the afternoon. A parking meter or the ORA app handles payment. Rates are typical for a Spanish coastal town - a few euros for two to three hours.
Free parking: Move two or three blocks inland from the seafront and you will find unrestricted residential parking. The area around the salt lake perimeter road and the southern residential quarters have free street parking outside the immediate beach zones.
Supermarket and retail car parks: The Mercadona, Lidl and larger commercial sites all have free car parks. Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, 20 km north in La Zenia, has 5,000 free spaces if you make a shopping trip in that direction.
August: Beach-front spaces fill by 09:00-10:00 on hot days. Arrive early or plan for the late afternoon.
Low Emission Zone (ZBE): Torrevieja has established a ZBE in its town centre, as required under Spanish national law. The City Council has officially confirmed that no fines will be issued for ZBE violations before 1 January 2027. In practice for the whole of 2026, driving any modern hire car in the zone carries no financial penalty. Hire cars supplied by any established company all carry the DGT environmental label (B or C rating) that would make them compliant in any case - so even after 2026, standard rental cars are the low-risk category.
La Mata: the quieter beach area 5 km north
La Mata is technically a barrio (district) of the Torrevieja municipality rather than a separate town, but it has its own identity. It sits roughly 5 km northeast of Torrevieja town centre along the N-332, and the drive takes under 10 minutes.
La Mata beach: A long, clean sandy beach that faces slightly northeast. It is consistently less crowded than the main beaches in Torrevieja itself - partly because it has fewer direct bus connections. Blue Flag designation most seasons. The water is shallow and calm along the main stretch, which makes it good for families with young children.
Laguna de La Mata (Laguna Verde): The second lagoon in the natural park - the green counterpart to the famous pink lake. Flamingo flocks use both lagoons and move between them seasonally. The birdwatching hides and the coastal trail along the west edge of the La Mata Lagoon are reached by a track off the N-332 about 1 km from the La Mata roundabout. There is no bus to this viewpoint, and walking from La Mata beach in summer heat is uncomfortable. A car makes the lagoon accessible in minutes.
Parking in La Mata: Free street parking is available along the residential streets one block back from the beach. In peak August weeks the beachfront spaces are full by mid-morning; arriving before 09:00 or after 17:00 resolves it. Outside high season there is no difficulty at all.
The via verde between the two lagoons: A walking and cycling trail on the route of the old salt railway line runs between the Torrevieja salt lake and La Mata lagoon. Driving to the northern end near La Mata and walking or cycling south is a popular option that avoids the full out-and-back. There is car parking at both ends.
Day trips from Torrevieja by car
A car multiplies the value of a Torrevieja base considerably. The surrounding area is varied and the road distances are short.
- Orihuela Costa (La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig): 20 minutes north on the N-332. Excellent restaurants, additional Blue Flag beaches, Zenia Boulevard shopping centre. See the full picture in our Orihuela Costa car hire guide.
- Guardamar del Segura and the dune forest: 25 minutes north. One of the genuinely underrated natural areas on the coast - pine forest planted over sand dunes, a long beach and a historic town centre. Worth a full morning.
- Murcia city: About 50 minutes inland on the A-30. Cathedral, excellent food market, walkable historic centre. Good for a cultural half-day if beach days get repetitive.
- Cartagena: Around 55 minutes south on the AP-7 or N-332. Roman theatre, a Spanish Navy submarine open to visitors, a good port area for lunch. Distinct from Torrevieja in character and well worth the drive.
- Murcia Airport (RMU): If part of your group is flying via Murcia instead of Alicante, the airport is about 55 minutes from Torrevieja. Our Murcia Airport car hire guide covers pickup options from that terminal.
None of these trips work realistically on public transport from Torrevieja. The bus network thins out sharply outside the main Alicante-Torrevieja corridor.
Comparing car hire options for Torrevieja
There are no car hire desks in Torrevieja itself. This matters. Every company that serves the town either operates from Alicante Airport (ALC) or delivers to your accommodation. Understanding the difference saves you time and money.
| Option | How you get the car | Best for | Deposit | Card accepted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport majors (Goldcar, Centauro, Europcar, Sixt, Record Go) | Desk in ALC terminal | Largest fleet choice, immediate pickup | Several hundred EUR+ on credit card | Credit card required |
| Booking brokers (Rentalcars.com, DoYouSpain) | Subcontracted to above companies | Price comparison across brands | Depends on underlying supplier | As per supplier |
| Local with delivery (e.g. WeOneRent) | Delivered to your address in Torrevieja or La Mata | No airport queue, debit card, zero deposit option | 0 EUR on full cover tariff | Debit or credit |
Airport chains are convenient if you want to collect immediately on arrival. The trade-offs are well-documented: high-season desk queues at ALC can run 30-45 minutes, the deposit hold is typically several hundred euros on a credit card, and upsell pressure at the desk for insurance upgrades is common. For travellers who have sorted insurance in advance and just want the car, this is fine. For those without a credit card or who want zero deposit, it is a problem.
Local delivery works differently. The car is at your apartment, villa or hotel entrance at the agreed time. No queue, no terminal, no credit card requirement if you take full cover. The main thing to confirm is fleet availability - local companies have smaller fleets than airport chains, so booking ahead matters in July and August.
WeOneRent delivers across the Costa Blanca including Torrevieja and La Mata. We are rated 5.0 on Google from 100 reviews. Full details and live availability are on the Torrevieja rental page.
Which car size for Torrevieja?
Most Torrevieja visitors need a compact or economy car. The town's streets are wide and manageable, but side streets in the old quarter and narrow tracks near the salt lake perimeter are where large cars become awkward.
| Group | Recommended category | Example from WeOneRent fleet |
|---|---|---|
| 2 adults, light bags | Economy hatchback | Peugeot 208 |
| 2 adults, holiday luggage | Compact | Peugeot 308 or Opel Astra |
| 2 adults and 2 children | Compact or estate | Opel Astra |
| Eco preference | Hybrid | Hyundai Ioniq or Lexus CT200h |
| 4+ adults or large gear load | SUV | VW Tiguan (our single SUV) |
We do not carry vans, 7-seat vehicles or convertibles. If you need one of those, an airport chain is the better call. For economy and compact needs, check current availability at weonerent.es/our-cars.
If you are under 25: our young driver supplement is 9 EUR per day, which is lower than the 15-25 EUR per day charged by most airport chains. A second driver is 6 EUR per day. Child seats are available - 42 EUR or 36 EUR per rental depending on type - and should be reserved at booking rather than on the day.
For a longer stay in the area, monthly packages (+12/+18/+30/+36 days) are available. Details are in the widget when you select dates over 12 days, and there is more context in our long-term car rental guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a car hire office in Torrevieja?
No. There are no major chain rental desks in Torrevieja town. Your options are collecting from Alicante Airport (approximately 45 km north) or booking a company that delivers to your accommodation. We deliver to Torrevieja and La Mata directly.
Can I hire a car in Torrevieja without a credit card?
Yes, with WeOneRent. We accept debit cards on all tariffs. On our full cover tariff there is no deposit hold at all - just the rental cost. Airport chains typically require a credit card in the main driver's name with a substantial hold for the duration of the rental.
How long does it take to drive from Alicante Airport to Torrevieja?
Around 40-55 minutes via the A-7 inland motorway. Allow the longer end of that range in July and August, particularly on Friday afternoons. The N-332 coastal road takes 60-90 minutes in high season and is better saved for leisure driving once you have arrived.
Is La Mata worth a dedicated visit?
Yes. La Mata beach is consistently quieter than the main Torrevieja beaches and the water is calmer - good for families. The Laguna de La Mata (Laguna Verde) with its flamingo hides is only accessible by car. The drive from Torrevieja town centre is 5-10 minutes on the N-332.
Can I drive in Torrevieja's Low Emission Zone in 2026?
Yes, without any penalty. Torrevieja has confirmed no ZBE fines will be issued before 1 January 2027. Modern hire cars all carry valid DGT environmental labels. In 2027 and beyond, check current signage at zone entry points.
What is the best car size for Torrevieja?
For most visitors, an economy or compact hatchback is the right choice. The streets are manageable and compact cars park easily. Only book the SUV (VW Tiguan) if you genuinely need the boot space or plan extensive inland driving. Our economy car hire guide explains what you get in each category.
