How far is Orihuela Costa from Alicante Airport?
Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is the most convenient arrival point for all three resorts. The AP-7 motorway runs almost the entire way south and keeps driving times short even in summer when the coastal roads are busier.

Public transport from Alicante Airport to Orihuela Costa
There is a bus service. The Costa Azul operator runs coaches from Alicante airport to Torrevieja via Orihuela Costa, with departures roughly every hour between 08:00 and 22:00, 365 days a year. The pickup point is on level 2 of the terminal, at the right of the main exit. A single ticket costs around 7 EUR and the journey takes approximately one hour and thirty-five minutes.
The practical limitations are significant. The coaches serve Torrevieja and the main roads through Orihuela Costa, not the individual urbanizaciones. If your accommodation is in La Zenia proper, in Playa Flamenca or in Cabo Roig, you will still need a taxi from the nearest bus stop to reach your villa or apartment - adding both cost and waiting time to an already long journey. With luggage, children or an early or late arrival, this quickly becomes more complicated than it sounds on paper.
Taxis from Alicante airport are a faster alternative, but the one-way fare to Orihuela Costa is considerably more than two days of a compact car rental for the same route. Exploring La Zenia by car
La Zenia is the commercial heart of Orihuela Costa. The beach is a long, well-maintained sandy strip with full beach services, and it holds a Blue Flag designation most seasons. Cala Bosque and Cala Cerrada, two smaller cove beaches just to the south, are also accessible within a short drive and tend to be quieter than the main beach in peak season.
The biggest practical reason to have a car here is Zenia Boulevard. Opened in 2012 and still the largest shopping centre in the province of Alicante, it covers 161,000 square metres and houses over 150 shops, restaurants, a cinema and a casino. Crucially for self-drive visitors, there are 5,000 free parking spaces. Arriving by bus is technically possible via the N-332, but the centre is designed around car access, so there is no real incentive to arrive any other way.
The La Zenia urbanizacion has supermarkets, bars and restaurants within walking distance of most accommodation, but any trip beyond the immediate area - to Torrevieja 8 kilometres to the north, to the golf courses at Villamartin and Campoamor, or to the quieter coves further south - requires a vehicle. Playa Flamenca: the quieter neighbour
Playa Flamenca sits between La Zenia to the south and Punta Prima to the north and has a different feel from either. The urbanizacion is more compact, the beach is divided into two adjacent sections - both holding Blue Flag status - and the atmosphere is more low-key than the commercial energy of La Zenia.
The weekly Mercadillo market runs on Fridays and draws visitors from across Orihuela Costa. Stalls sell fresh produce, clothing, hardware and local goods; getting there without a car from neighbouring resorts is possible but slow, and the experience is easier when you are not rationing your shopping to what fits in a bus seat.

Cabo Roig: cliffs, marina and cove beaches
Cabo Roig occupies a headland approximately 9.5 kilometres south of Torrevieja and is the most visually distinctive of the three resorts. The headland divides two Blue Flag beaches: La Caleta, a sandy cove on the northern side, and Cala Capitan on the southern side. A coastal promenade connects both beaches and the marina, making this one of the few spots in Orihuela Costa where you can spend a full morning on foot without needing the car.
The marina is a genuine facility - not just a row of mooring points. There is a yacht club, waterfront restaurants and cafes, and calm water for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The car park above La Caleta fills early on summer weekends, so arriving before 10:00 or after 17:00 makes parking considerably easier.

Driving around Orihuela Costa: routes, tolls and parking
The AP-7 motorway is the fast route south from Alicante airport and the easiest way to reach any of the three resorts. The exit for La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig is clearly signposted onto the N-332. The N-332 is the free coastal road and the natural route for daily trips between La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig - they are so close together that the motorway adds little time saving for journeys within Orihuela Costa itself. The N-332 is slower, with roundabouts and traffic lights, but perfectly manageable at any time of year.
Parking across Orihuela Costa is generally straightforward outside the peak weeks in July and August. Most villas and apartment complexes have private or designated parking. Zenia Boulevard provides 5,000 free spaces. Beach-side street parking near La Zenia and Cabo Roig fills quickly on hot summer mornings, but arriving before 09:00 or in the late afternoon resolves the problem in most cases. There are no resident permit zones or complex payment systems in the residential urbanizaciones.
