Last summer a couple arrived at our handover spot near ALC arrivals clutching a printout: 19 euros per day, economy car, four days. They had paid 76 euros upfront. By the time they finished at the airport desk they had signed for insurance, a fuel pre-purchase and an excess waiver and walked out paying over 280 euros total. The base rate was real. The final number just had very little to do with it.
This happens dozens of times a day at Alicante-Elche Airport. Not because anyone is breaking the law, but because the advertised price for cheap car hire at ALC covers only part of what a rental actually costs. The rest appears at the counter, in the booking flow, or in the terms buried three screens down.
This guide breaks it down layer by layer - what gets added, why, how much it typically adds, and what a genuinely competitive total looks like. No surprises at pick-up.
Why car hire at the airport costs more from the start
Alicante-Elche Airport (IATA: ALC) handles over 15 million passengers a year. Having a desk inside or directly adjacent to the terminal is valuable real estate, and rental companies pay for it - either through Aena concession fees or through separate off-site arrangements with their own transfer buses. That cost gets passed on to customers as a location surcharge, sometimes labelled "airport fee" in the booking breakdown.
The surcharge exists across all major operators at ALC. It is not a scam. It is a real cost of running a desk where passengers land. Off-airport companies either skip this charge or charge less because their premises are cheaper - but they usually add a transfer step (bus or taxi) that takes 15 to 25 minutes each way.
Our rule at WeOneRent: we do not operate a physical desk inside the terminal. Instead we offer a free meet-and-greet service where one of our team brings the car to the express car park adjacent to arrivals, Monday to Sunday 09:00 to 20:00. No surcharge, no transfer bus. Outside those hours the fee is 50 euros - we are upfront about that in the booking, not in the small print.
The insurance gap in a cheap airport deal
The price that appears first on comparison sites - Kayak, Skyscanner, Rentalcars - is almost always the rate with a basic excess (called Collision Damage Waiver or CDW). This means you are covered for damage to the car, but only after a deductible. The deductible at airport operators for an economy car typically runs into several hundred euros. If anything is scratched on your watch, that amount comes off your deposit.
At the counter, the agent offers you a Super CDW or full cover product to bring that deductible to zero. It is a legitimate product and it is worth buying in some situations - but at airport rates it can add 15 to 30 euros per day to what you paid. On a seven-day hire, that is 105 to 210 euros extra that never appeared in the search result.
The alternative is to buy excess insurance separately, before you fly, through a specialist provider. Prices are typically 3 to 7 euros per day for similar cover. This is what experienced renters do. We explain the full picture in Spain car rental insurance explained.
At WeOneRent, our packages have fixed excess levels that are stated before you pay, and our Zero Deposit and Premium packages include zero excess by design. What you see in the widget is what you sign for - no counter upsell for insurance.
The deposit: blocked on your card or handed back in cash
This is the item that most often catches travellers off guard. At the large chains operating at ALC, the deposit for an economy car is a temporary block on your credit card - typically several hundred to over 1,000 euros depending on the company and package. The money is not charged, but it is frozen and unavailable, sometimes for the entire duration of the hire and several days after return.
If you do not have a credit card, or if your credit card limit is too low, you may be turned away at the desk even with a confirmed booking. Debit cards are either refused or accepted only with a significantly higher deposit and additional ID checks.
This detail is legal and disclosed, but it is not in the headline price. When comparing totals, the deposit situation matters as much as the daily rate - especially on a family holiday where the card is also paying for accommodation and activities.
At WeOneRent, we accept debit cards. Our deposits on most packages are returnable cash payments, not card blocks. Zero Deposit and Premium packages require no deposit at all. The full breakdown of how our deposit-free pickup works at ALC is in a separate guide if that is your priority.
Fuel policy: a hidden price in disguise
Full-to-full is the standard policy we use, and the fair one: you pick up a full tank, you return it full. If you return it empty, you pay for the fuel you used at the pump rate - no markup. Simple.
The alternative pushed at many airport desks is prepaid fuel. You pay for a full tank upfront, at a price set by the operator. If you return the car with half a tank left, you do not get a refund. If you fill it back up yourself before returning, you have paid twice for that fuel.
Prepaid fuel is presented as "convenient" - no need to find a petrol station before you return. The convenience is real. The maths rarely favour the customer. On a week's hire with moderate driving, the premium over pump prices can easily run to 40 to 60 euros.
When you see a cheap rate that includes a fuel option, check whether it is full-to-full or prepaid. If it is prepaid, adjust your mental total accordingly.
The extras that arrive at the counter
Even if you skip the insurance upsell, the desk moment at large operators comes with other offers: GPS, child seats, additional driver add-ons, tolls packages, roadside protection. Each one is optional. Each one has a daily fee.
- GPS navigation: At most ALC operators this runs 10 to 15 euros per day. Your phone with an offline map does exactly the same job for free. We say this every week at pick-up: download Google Maps or Maps.me for your route before you leave home.
- Child seats: These are worth paying for rather than bringing your own on the plane. At WeOneRent, a child seat costs 42 euros for the rental period, a booster seat 36 euros. Book in advance - availability is limited in summer. Spanish law follows EU rules: children under 135 cm must use an approved restraint.
- Additional driver: At WeOneRent this is 6 euros per day. Some airport operators charge more. If two of you will drive, ask before you sign.
- Toll packages: Some operators sell a tag or prepaid tolls package. The AP-7 motorway in this region has no tolls on the southern section (Crevillente to Cartagena); check the specific roads on your itinerary before paying for a package. Our guide to paying motorway tolls in a rental car covers the options in detail.
Reading the total honestly: a worked comparison
The same economy car, same dates, hired from two different setups at ALC. These numbers are illustrative - actual prices vary by season and availability. The point is the structure, not the exact figures.
| Cost element | Large chain at airport desk | WeOneRent (meet and greet) |
|---|---|---|
| Base rate (7 days, economy) | 95 EUR | Check live widget |
| Location surcharge | 35-60 EUR | 0 EUR (or 50 EUR after 20:00) |
| Super CDW / zero excess | 105-175 EUR (15-25/day) | Included in package price |
| Deposit (blocked on card) | 500-1,000 EUR credit card hold | Zero Deposit: 0 EUR |
| Prepaid fuel or refuelling fee | 40-80 EUR risk | Full-to-full, no markup |
| GPS | 70-105 EUR (10-15/day) | Not offered (use phone) |
| Rough total (without GPS) | 275-410 EUR | Base rate only (see widget) |
The base rate column is what shows in the search result. The rough total is what you pay. The difference is not hidden in a legal sense - all of it is disclosed somewhere in the booking. It is hidden in the structure of how comparison sites surface prices.
When airport pickup genuinely is the right choice
Not everything about airport car hire is bad value. There are situations where picking up at the terminal makes sense:
- Late arrivals: If your flight lands at 22:00 and you have an early start the next morning, an airport desk may be the only option that does not involve a taxi to the city and back. For our late-arrival policy see the ALC late arrival guide.
- Very short rentals: A one-day hire for a specific purpose sometimes makes the airport surcharge tolerable if the alternative is a taxi each way.
- Party split: If your group is splitting up and one half needs the car at the airport, an airport pickup removes a logistics problem.
The question is never "is airport hire bad?" but "does the total price of this airport hire, all-in, beat the total price of the best alternative including any transfer cost?"
How WeOneRent works at Alicante Airport
We have been handing over cars at ALC for several years. Our setup: you land, we meet you at the express car park on the arrivals level - no bus, no queue at a counter, no upsell moment. The paperwork takes about five minutes. The car is there.
Between 09:00 and 20:00 this is free. Outside those hours the fee is 50 euros - for flights landing past 20:00 that is a real cost to factor in. We tell you this during booking, not afterwards.
Our rating on Google is 5.0 from 124 reviews. Trustpilot is 4.6. We mention this not because it makes us perfect but because it is verifiable - you can read what actual customers said about the pick-up experience before you book.

Checklist before you commit to a cheap airport deal
Go through this before entering payment details:
- What is the total after adding the insurance option that brings excess to zero?
- What card type does the deposit require, and how much will be blocked?
- Is the fuel policy full-to-full or prepaid?
- Is there an airport location surcharge, and is it included in the quoted total or added at checkout?
- What is the cancellation policy if your flight is delayed or cancelled?
- Where exactly is the pickup point, and how do you get there from arrivals?
Six questions. Thirty seconds each. They turn a cheap headline into a real comparison. For the full handover checklist once you have the keys, see what to check at car hire pick-up in Spain.
Frequently asked questions
Why is car hire at Alicante Airport more expensive than booking a city-centre pickup?
Desks inside or adjacent to the terminal pay a concession fee to the airport operator (Aena). That cost is passed on as a location surcharge. Off-airport companies and local operators avoid this cost. The difference in headline rate can be 30 to 50 euros per hire. Add insurance and deposit differences and the gap often widens. The airport versus city-centre comparison covers this in full.
Can I pay a cash deposit at Alicante Airport car hire?
At the large chains, almost certainly not - they require a credit card block. Some local operators, including WeOneRent, accept a cash deposit or debit card, or offer zero-deposit packages. Check before you book if this matters to you.
What documents do I need to pick up a rental car at ALC?
Your driving licence, passport or national ID, and the booking confirmation. EU/EEA licences are accepted as-is. Non-EU licences issued in countries without a bilateral agreement with Spain may need an International Driving Permit - check the DGT rules for your country before you travel.
Is it cheaper to book cheap car hire at Alicante Airport online or at the desk?
Booking online in advance is almost always cheaper than a walk-up desk rate, and prices rise significantly in July and August. That said, the online total and the final signed total can still differ by a large margin if you do not read what the base rate excludes. Book online, but read all the way through the checkout.
What is an airport surcharge on car hire?
A fee charged by the rental company to cover the cost of operating at an airport location. It may appear in the checkout as "location fee", "airport fee" or "premium location surcharge". It is separate from government taxes. Some comparison sites include it in the total; others add it at the last step.
Can I get zero-deposit car hire at Alicante Airport?
Yes. WeOneRent offers Zero Deposit and Premium packages that require no deposit at all, collected via a free meet-and-greet at ALC arrivals. See the no-deposit guide for ALC for the full details.
Check the real total before you book
The numbers in this guide are ranges, not guarantees - actual prices change by date, car category and what is left in inventory. The only way to know your real total is to price it out. Our widget at weonerent.es shows the complete price including all options before you enter payment details. No location surcharge, no insurance surprise at the counter. Compare it against whatever the cheapest airport deal you found shows all-in. That comparison will tell you what you are actually paying for.
